The Great Kruger Crossing: An 11-Day Expedition from South to North
Snippet: Embark on the ultimate 1,000 km pilgrimage. Journey from the lush southern forests of Berg-en-Dal to the tropical fever tree forests of Pafuri; find out why this is the perfect itinerary for your next nature trip.
There is no better way to truly “hear” the heartbeat of Africa than by camping. Stripping away the brick and mortar of luxury lodges allows the sounds of the nightโthe rhythmic sawing of a leopard or the hysterical giggle of a hyenaโto become your evening soundtrack.
At AFRICABIG5SAFARIS AND TOURS, we have designed the “Great Crossing”: a 10-night, 11-day expedition that traverses the entire length of the Kruger National Park.
Days 1-2: The Granite South (Berg-en-Dal)
We begin our journey in the rugged, mountainous southwest. Berg-en-Dal is unique for its granite koppies and higher rainfall, making it a lush haven for rhinos and leopards.
- The Experience: Camp along the perimeter fence where elephants often graze just meters away.
- The Highlight: The Rhino Perimeter Trail, a guided walk that focuses on the “Big 5” track identification.
Days 3-4: The Lion Capital (Lower Sabi )
Moving east toward the Sabie River, we pitch our tents at Lower Sabie. This is arguably the most popular site in the park due to the incredible density of leopards and lions drawn to the water.
- The Experience: Falling asleep to the constant “honking” of hippos in the river below.
- The Highlight: A sunset drive along the H4-1, the most productive predator road in Africa.
Days 5-6: The Central Plains (Satara)
As we move into the “sweet grass” central plains, the landscape opens up. Satara is known as the “Land of the Lion.” The open plains make for world-class visibility.
- The Experience: Vast, starry skies undisturbed by city lights. This is the best spot for astrophotography.
- The Highlight: Watching large herds of buffalo and the prides of lions that follow them.
Day 7: The Mopane Wilderness (Letaba)
Crossing into the northern half of the park, the vegetation shifts to mopane shrubbery. Letaba (meaning “River of Sand”) is a peaceful oasis famous for its “Magnificent Seven” elephant gallery.
- The Experience: Sitting at the Letaba River lookout point as herds of elephants come down to drink during the midday heat.
- The Highlight: Visiting the Elephant Hall museum to see the tusks of the park’s legendary giants.
Day 8-9: The Ancient North (Shingwedzi)
Now deep in the wild north, Shingwedzi offers a sense of isolation and raw beauty. The river loop here is legendary for sightings of large tuskers and the elusive African wild dog.
- The Experience: Traditional “braai” (barbecue) under the ancient Sycamore Fig trees.
- The Highlight: The Shingwedzi River loop at sunriseโprime territory for Nyala and Verreaux’s Eagle-Owls.
Days 10-11: The Tropical Finale (Punda Maria & Pafuri)
Our journey concludes at the northernmost tip of South Africa. Punda Maria is a bird-watcher’s paradise, feeling more like Zimbabwe or Mozambique than the rest of the park.
- The Experience: A final night at the most remote campsite in the park, surrounded by baobabs that have stood for a thousand years.
- The Highlight: A morning excursion to the Pafuri Border and the Fever Tree Forestโa hauntingly beautiful canopy of yellow-barked trees that marks the end of our crossing.

At each of our scheduled stopsโfrom the historic bungalows of Skukuza to the charming thatched rondavels of Shingwedziโwe can arrange upgraded accommodation in the parkโs iconic rest camps.
- Authentic African Architecture: Stay in traditional round “rondavels” that offer air-conditioning and private en-suite facilities.
- The Best of Both Worlds: Enjoy the same expert guiding and rugged 1,000 km route during the day, with the luxury of a comfortable bed and a private kitchenette at night.
