Experience the wild from the seat of a safari vehicle and the soles of your boots.
Prepare for a day of pure African adrenaline. AFRICABIG5SAFARIS AND TOURS invites you on a dual-experience journey that combines the raw wilderness of the Pilanesberg with the heart-pounding intimacy of a predator encounter.
A Tale of Two Worlds Your day is designed as a journey of contrasts. You begin in the “Volcanic Wilderness” of the Pilanesberg, where the landscape is a massive, ancient crater. Here, the focus is on the vastness of the bush and the thrill of the hunt as we track elephants and rhinos through the scrub. In the afternoon, the experience shifts to “Intimate Conservation.” You move from observer to participant, feeling the crunch of the earth beneath your boots as you walk in the presence of greatness.
While many tourists flock to larger parks, the Pilanesberg offers a “Transition Zone” advantage.
The afternoon session is a deep dive into the “Vulnerability of Strength.”
At AFRICABIG5SAFARIS AND TOURS, we believe adventure shouldn’t be uncomfortable.
If you are pressed for time or have already completed your Big 5 safari, we offer a standalone Guided Predator Encounter. This focused experience skips the morning Pilanesberg drive and takes you straight to the heart of the action for the afternoon Lion Walk and Cheetah program. It is the perfect high-impact adventure for those staying in the area who want a dedicated encounter with Africa’s most iconic carnivores.

For your comfort! The drive from your pickup point to Pilanesberg can be long and involves highway speeds. A standard air-conditioned vehicle is much quieter and more comfortable for the transit. Once at the Park Gate, we switch to the Open Safari Vehicle to give you 360-degree views, the smell of the bush, and the best possible angles for photography during the actual safari.
Yes, safety is our absolute priority. The walk is led by highly trained professional handlers who understand lion behavior intimately.
Requirement: All participants must be at least 1.5 meters (approx. 5 feet) tall.
Health: You should be able to walk at a moderate pace on uneven natural terrain for about an hour.
Pilanesberg is unique because it does not have Cape Buffalo. However, this is actually a benefit for our guests! Because there are no buffalo, the park has a very high density of Rhino, Elephant, and Predators. You are trading one species for a much higher chance of seeing the others, plus rare animals like Cheetah and Brown Hyena that are harder to find elsewhere
While the "Walk" is focused on the Lions, the facility we visit is home to several other species. Depending on the day and the animals' well-being, you will likely encounter Cheetahs and African Wild Dogs. This provides a fantastic educational overview of Africa’s most endangered and powerful carnivores.
Since the morning starts early and you will be in an open vehicle, it can be chilly—we recommend layering your clothing.
Must-haves: Closed walking shoes (mandatory for the lion walk), a hat, high-factor sunscreen, and your camera/power bank.
Note: Avoid wearing bright "neon" colors; neutral tones (khaki, grey, green) are best for wildlife viewing.
