Experience the Kruger Most People Never See
Day 1: Into the Deep South-East Kruger National Park.
- 06:00 AM – The Sunrise Entry: We enter through Crocodile Bridge or Malelane Gate, but we immediately bypass the main H1 road.
- The Hidden Route: We navigate the S28 (Sabi River loop) and the S130. These gravel roads follow ancient elephant paths and are famous for territorial leopards and the “Southern Pride” of lions.
- Mid-Day – The Sand River Silence: Instead of a crowded camp, we stop at a quiet, elevated lookout point over the Sand River. Here, we observe hippos and crocodiles while enjoying a gourmet packed brunch.
- Afternoon – The Basalt Plains: We head toward Lower Sabie but stay on the eastern boundary roads where the plains open up, offering a chance to see cheetahs—the ghosts of the savannah.
- Overnight: Skukuza or Lower Sabie (Rest Camps).
Day 2: The Central Plains & The S100 Legend
- 05:30 AM – Dawn on the S100: We travel north toward Satara. The S100 is a world-renowned gravel road. While it’s popular, we hit it at first light to track the “Mega-Prides” (lions that hunt buffalo in groups of 20 or more).
- Hidden Waterhole – N’wanetsi: We visit the N’wanetsi lookout, a breathtaking silent corner where the Lebombo Mountains meet the plains. It’s the perfect spot for a coffee break with a 360-degree view into Mozambique.
- The “Untamed” Loop: We explore the S125, a winding road through beautiful fever trees and dry riverbeds where elephants love to dig for underground water.

1. Is it safe to be in an open-viewing vehicle with predators?
Absolutely. Your safety is our #1 priority. Our vehicles are designed to provide maximum visibility while keeping you secure. Lions and other predators see the vehicle as one large, non-prey object. As long as you remain seated and follow your guide’s instructions (no waving arms or standing up suddenly), the animals remain calm and indifferent to our presence.
2. How close will we actually get to the lions?
In our Lion Safari, the encounters are often very close—sometimes within 2 to 5 meters of the vehicle! Because the lions are accustomed to the AfricaBigSafaris vehicles, they don't feel threatened and often continue their natural behaviors, like playing or grooming, right next to us. In the "Silent Corners" Kruger tour, distances vary, but we always carry high-quality binoculars for those more distant, wild sightings.
3. What happens if it rains on the day of my safari?
A little "African liquid gold" won't stop the adventure! Most animals actually become more active in cooler, rainy weather. Our vehicles are equipped with roll-down waterproof sides or we provide high-quality ponchos to keep you dry. However, in the event of extreme weather that compromises safety, we will work with you to reschedule or provide a refund.
4. Are these tours suitable for young children?
Yes! Our Half-Day Lion Safari is a family favorite because it is short enough (approx. 3–4 hours total) to keep kids engaged without the "safari fatigue" of a 10-hour day. For the longer Kruger expeditions, we recommend children be at least 6 years old, but we can customize private family tours to include more frequent breaks for younger explorers.
5. Do I need to take malaria medication for these safaris?
The Lion & Safari Park near Johannesburg is in a Malaria-Free zone, so no medication is required. However, Kruger National Park is considered a low-risk malaria area. We recommend consulting your doctor before your trip, especially during the wet summer months (October–March). Wearing long sleeves in the evenings and using repellent is always a good practice!
